Drinking water safe to consume in Palm Beach County, health officials say

The Department of Health in Palm Beach County determined Friday that it is now safe for residents to use tap water for drinking.

 

Last week, the City of West Palm Beach notified the Department of Health that toxins were detected in the city's water treatment plant. Cylindospermospin, which is a toxin produced by cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, was the toxin detected. In a press conference Thursday, West Palm Beach Mayor Keith James said he was originally told that the water tests had to show specific levels for two consecutive days in order for the advisory to be lifted. He noted that after getting ready to lift the advisory after two "clean" samples were returned, he found out the DEP also had to agree to clear the advisory.
