The Glades Mulch Fire in Port St. Lucie is expected to continue burning for weeks.
The St. Lucie Fire District tweeted that the fire is smoldering and burning over 28 million acres and millions of tons of organic matter, which can get as high as four stories.
"Unfortunately, there is simply not enough water nor the ability to extinguish a fire of that magnitude quickly," the fire district said in a tweet.
A lightning strike sparked the fire last Thursday, officials said.
"It’s a combination of things, it wasn’t just a simple lightning strike. It was a lightning strike, and the fuels were ready to go up. So, everything out here is ready to burn," said David Grubich, forest area supervisor of Florida Forest Service.
