Champlain Towers South demolished late Sunday night

Champlain Towers South was demolished Sunday night.

During a press conference Sunday evening, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced that demolition of the Champlain Towers South would take place Sunday night between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m.

 

Search and rescue efforts were temporarily paused to prepare for this demolition.

The partial building collapse happened at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, June 24th, 2021.

Champlain Towers is made up of three buildings that are each 12 stories tall and contain 342 units. It is located in the small, beachside town of Surfside, about six miles north of Miami Beach. The side of the south building that collapsed is on the ocean side.

Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said there were more than 100 units in the building and a third of the building "pancaked." On the day of the collapse, 35 victims were pulled from the structure and two were pulled from the rubble, including a teenager.
