Lake Worth Beach, Boca Raton working towards banning smoking at beaches

LAKE WORTH, Fla. —

Soon, it may cost you to light up a cigarette at several Palm Beach County beaches.

Leaders in Lake Worth Beach and Boca Raton are making moves to ban cigarette smoking at beaches.

A new law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in June that empowers cities and counties to regulate smoking is now opening the door for municipalities to make their own rules. Previously, it could only be regulated by the state.

Lake Worth Beach District 1 Commissioner Sarah Malega said as soon as DeSantis signed the law, she proposed a ban on Lake Worth Beach beaches to her fellow commissioners and the mayor. She said, now, they’re all on board and working on an ordinance that will be introduced and voted on in August.
