Palm Beach County COVID-19 community transmission decreases as more people get vaccination

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. —

The Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners is holding a press conference Tuesday.

Dr. Alino Alonso gave a COVID-19 update, stating that the county is following Florida's decreasing trends. "We're hoping we can keep this up," Alonso said. She noted with holidays coming, there may be small increases, but nothing substantial. Community transmission decreased in the county to moderate as 53% of the population is now vaccinated. As the demand for vaccination decreases, the supply will still continue and the county plans to use mobile sites to reach people in the community. The age group with the largest vaccination rate is the 65 and older group at 82%, while the 20-29-year-old group has the lowest vaccination rate at 22%. Palm Beach County has a positivity rate of 3.2%, with the highest-positivity group at ages 12-19 who have a positivity rate of 5.4%.

Palm Beach County School District in-person graduations start at South Florida Fairgrounds

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. —

More than 14,000 students are graduating from 32 schools in Palm Beach County. Four of those ceremonies took place last week On Monday, the first of more than two dozen schools in the county began holding in-person ceremonies at the South Florida Fairgrounds Expo Center in West Palm Beach.

Santaluces Community High School was the first to hold a ceremony, with nearly 600 students taking the stage. As a precaution, there were a lot of changes and coronavirus safety protocols in place, including mask requirements. As graduates walked across the stage, there was no handshaking, and guests were separated into a different section of the building from graduates. Guests were able to watch parts of the ceremony through large screens, and parents were only able to see graduates twice. Once as they passed through during a procession, and then as they walked across the stage.

Drinking water safe to consume in Palm Beach County, health officials say

The Department of Health in Palm Beach County determined Friday that it is now safe for residents to use tap water for drinking.

Last week, the City of West Palm Beach notified the Department of Health that toxins were detected in the city's water treatment plant. Cylindospermospin, which is a toxin produced by cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, was the toxin detected. In a press conference Thursday, West Palm Beach Mayor Keith James said he was originally told that the water tests had to show specific levels for two consecutive days in order for the advisory to be lifted. He noted that after getting ready to lift the advisory after two "clean" samples were returned, he found out the DEP also had to agree to clear the advisory.
