Keep your mask handy: These chains and retailers are maintaining their face covering policies

As more areas begin to relax mask mandates, not all retailers are ready to follow suit. Here are some of the largest that continue to maintain face coverings for customers.

RELAXING MASK RULES

As we head into warmer weather, the White House is expected to relax mask guidelines today. We’re expecting this announcement to give separate recommendations for fully vaccinated people and those who have not received a vaccine. We’re also expecting any loosened restrictions to be geared toward wearing masks outdoors since the risk of getting COVID-19 outside is lower. Some states have already started updating their own mask regulations. The announcement is expected at 1:15 p.m. ET.

Keep Your Mask Handy

While some states end mask mandates and the recommendations might be relaxing for outdoors, stores and retailers aren’t relaxing mask rules. Check out the full list here, but here are a few of the larger ones:

  • Aldi
  • Best Buy
  • Costco
  • CVS Pharmacy
  • Home Depot
  • Lowe’s
  • Starbucks
  • Target
  • Walgreens
  • Walmart

Tokyo under 'emergency orders' due to COVID-19 cases with Olympics just three months away

Only three months before the postponed Olympics are set to open, Tokyo and Japan's second largest metropolitan area of Osaka have been placed under emergency orders aimed at stemming surging cases of the coronavirus.

The measures, which take place during Japan's "golden week" holiday period, are meant to limit travel and keep people out of public places. They are to end on May 11, just ahead of a widely reported visit to Hiroshima by International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach.

Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, dies at 99

LONDON —

Prince Philip, the irascible and tough-minded husband of Queen Elizabeth II who spent more than seven decades supporting his wife in a role that both defined and constricted his life, has died, Buckingham Palace said Friday. He was 99. His life spanned nearly a century of European history, starting with his birth as a member of the Greek royal family and ending as Britain’s longest serving consort during a turbulent reign in which the thousand-year-old monarchy was forced to reinvent itself for the 21st century.

Mask mandate repealed in St. Lucie County

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. —

St. Lucie County Tuesday night became the latest Florida county to repeal its mask mandate.

Commissioners voted 4-1 to end the mandate that required masks inside government buildings.

Public comment on the issue lasted for hours, and it was obvious from the very beginning how the majority of the crowd felt about the mandate. “Repeal this mandate,” demanded resident Matthew Pilch, the first speaker of the evening. The mandate in St. Lucie County had been in place since last July. Tuesday night, resident after resident stepped up to the podium to ask  commissioners to get rid of it.

MLB moving All-Star Game from Atlanta in response to voting restrictions

Cardboard cutouts of fans in the otherwise empty seats face the field during the sixth inning of a baseball game between the Atlanta Braves and Tampa Bay Rays in Atlanta, in this Thursday, July 30, 2020, file photo. Georgia’s new voting law _ which critics claim severely limits access to the ballot box, especially for people of color _ has prompted calls from as high as the White House to consider moving the midsummer classic out of Atlanta. Major League Baseball announced Friday it was moving this summer's All-Star Game from Atlanta's Truist Park, a response to Georgia enacting a new law last month restricting voting rights. MLB had awarded the game to Atlanta in May 2019 and the game was scheduled for July 13 as part of baseball's midsummer break that includes the Futures Game on July 11 and Home Run Derby the following night.
