MLB: It's deadline day to save opening day, 162-game season

Major League Baseball negotiations to end the lockout are extending to the limit.

Management says a deal must be reached by the end of Monday's negotiations to salvage a March 31 start to the regular season and a 162-game schedule.

With that in mind, the sides are scheduled to meet starting at 10 a.m., three hours earlier than usual. This will be the eighth straight day of talks at Roger Dean Stadium, the vacant spring training home of the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals.

The lockout is in its 89th day. MLB has not fixed an exact time to the deadline, which leads to the possibility of bargaining sessions stretching into the wee hours if both sides see a deal within reach.

Sides were still far apart, but pressure is increasing. Players would lose $20.5 million in salary for each day of the season that is canceled, according to a study by The Associated Press, and the 30 teams would lose large sums that are harder to pin down.

Oscar-nominated 'MASH' actor Sally Kellerman dies at 84

Sally Kellerman, the Oscar and Emmy nominated actor who played Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in director Robert Altman's 1970 film “MASH," died Thursday.

Kellerman died of heart failure at her home in the Woodland Hills section of Los Angeles, her manager and publicist Alan Eichler said. She was 84.

Kellerman had a career of more than 60 years in film and television. She played a college professor who was returning student Rodney Dangerfield's love interest in the 1986 comedy “Back to School.” And she was a regular in Altman's films, appearing in 1970's “Brewster McCloud," 1992's “The Player” and 1994's “Ready to Wear.”

But she would always be best known for playing Major Houlihan, a straitlaced, by-the-book Army nurse who is tormented by rowdy doctors during the Korean War in the army comedy “MASH."

His mother promised him $1,800 when he turned 18 -- if he stayed off social media for 6 years

Sara Smart, CNN

If someone said they'd pay you $1,800 to stay off social media for six years, would you do it? Could you?

Sivert Klefsaas did just that.

"I thought it was awesome," Sivert told CNN Tuesday, "I thought, 'Ah what's 6 more years?'"

In 2016, Lorna Goldstrand Klefsaas challenged her 12-year-old son Sivert to stay off social media until he was 18. If he completed the challenge, she'd award him the cash on his eighteenth birthday. On Feb. 19, 2022, Sivert claimed his prize.

Lorna was inspired by a challenge she heard on the radio called the "16 for 16", where a mother gave her daughter $1,600 when she turned 16 if she stayed off social media, she told CNN. She decided to up the ante to two extra years and $200 more.

Sivert said it wasn't too difficult to live without social media, and he didn't think about it much during the six years. As a 12 year old, Sivert said he wasn't using social media much anyway. The only app he had prior to the bet was Snapchat -- which he deleted a day after trying it out.

Here are 5 health benefits of red wine for National Drink Wine Day

You might not need an excuse for a glass of red for National Drink Wine Day, but in case you do, here are five health benefits as identified by experts.

"Red wine contains antioxidants, particularly polyphenols provided by the grapes," says Gabby Geerts, registered dietitian at Green Chef. "Polyphenols have been shown to improve heart function and blood pressure, thus reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease."

But in order to get that wellness boost, you have to stop sipping after a five-ounce glass. Otherwise, Geerts says, you'll miss out on the healthy perks—and increase your risk of being seriously hungover the next day.

So, when consuming, keep in mind that a little glass is all you need to score massive, science-backed benefits.

Rams fans cheer Super Bowl champs at LA victory parade

LOS ANGELES —

Matthew Stafford, Cooper Kupp, Aaron Donald and the rest of the Los Angeles Rams celebrated their Super Bowl championship Wednesday with a victory parade and rollicking rally where they told thousands of cheering fans they would try to "run it back" and win again next year.

Fans lined sidewalks along the mile-long parade route as team members passed around the Lombardi Trophy, chugged champagne and waved from open-top double-decker buses that rolled to a plaza outside Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Shailene Woodley and Aaron Rodgers call off their engagement

Shailene Woodley and Aaron Rodgers have called off their engagement, a source close to Woodley told CNN.

"They grew apart, both have busy careers and unfortunately their relationship took a backseat. There is no animosity and they will remain friends," the source said.

Their respective representatives have not responded to CNN's request for comment.

Their break up comes nearly one year after Woodley's interview with Jimmy Fallon in which she confirmed that she was planning to wed the football star.

"Yes, we are engaged," Woodley said. "We are engaged. But for us, it's not new news, you know, so it's kind of funny. Everybody right now is freaking out over it and we're like, 'Yeah, we've been engaged for a while.'"

Woodley had also said that due to the COVID-19 pandemic she had yet to see Rodgers play quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.

"We met during this whacky, whacky time and all of the stadiums were closed that he was playing in, so I've yet to go to a football game,' she added. "I didn't really grow up with sports, especially American sports; it was never really on my radar."

Sold out: More than 100,000 people expected for Daytona 500 race weekend

Nascar announced the Daytona 500 is sold out including reserved front stretch seating, RV camping and Fanzone admissions.

“Overall, the health and the momentum of the sport is really phenomenal,” Frank Kelleher said.

With some drivers already in town and race fans rolling in, Kelleher, the Speedway president, is optimistic.

The Daytona 500 had limited capacity in 2021, but 2022 is wide open with more than 100,000 people expected.

“They're ready to be -- ready to be outdoors. They're ready to be in the stands watching the action here at the track and we're grateful for their support,” Kelleher said.

A parade to showcase Nascar’s history and its pioneers rolled down A1A, just east of the beach where stock car racing began Monday.

2022 Winter Olympics Day 10: US claims medals in multiple events

BEIJING —

Here's what happened during Day 10:

Figure Skating

Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva will be allowed to compete for a second gold medal at the Winter Olympics despite failing a pre-Games drug test.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled Monday that the 15-year-old Valieva, the favorite for the women’s individual gold, does not need to be provisionally suspended ahead of a full hearing into her positive test for the heart drug trimetazidine. The positive test was Dec. 25.

The Russian team can still aim for the first women’s figure skating podium sweep in Olympic history. The event starts with the short program Tuesday and concludes Thursday with the free skate. Valieva is the favorite to win gold.

The ruling only addresses whether Valieva can keep skating before her case is resolved. It doesn’t decide the fate of the one gold medal that she has already won.

New 'Jurassic World Dominion' trailer shows stars new and old tracking down dinosaurs

Welcome back to Jurassic World.

Universal Pictures recently debuted the new trailer for "Jurassic World Dominion" — one of the most highly anticipated films of 2022.

The first look featured everything you would expect from a "Jurassic World" movie: dinosaurs running wild, Chris Pratt on a motorcycle chasing down those dinosaurs plus several call backs to previous films, including the original's cast of Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum.

That's all good news for Universal and theaters because the Jurassic Park franchise has been big business for both for nearly 30 years.

Super Bowl commercials cost $7 million each. Are they worth it?

Super Bowl commercials are more expensive than ever. But for advertisers, they're a better deal than ever.

NBC — which is broadcasting this year's game — announced last week that it is sold out of Super Bowl ads, with multiple 30 second spots having sold for a record $7 million each.

Why would advertisers spend $7 million on one ad? Because it's the Super Bowl — a broadcast that is still watched by roughly 100 million viewers, even as ratings for some other big sporting events are falling.

Nothing in the media world comes close to getting companies the exposure that the Super Bowl can. That's increasingly important as the media landscape grows more fragmented, according to Patrick Crakes, a former Fox Sports executive turned media consultant.

Free at-home COVID-19 tests coming for people on Medicare

WASHINGTON —

The Biden administration, seeking to fill a frustrating gap in COVID-19 testing coverage, announced on Thursday that people with Medicare will be able to get free over-the-counter tests much more easily in the coming weeks.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said Medicare will cover up to eight free tests per month, starting in early spring. The tests will be handed out at participating pharmacies and other locations. They'll be available to people who have Medicare's "Part B" outpatient benefit, which about 9 in 10 enrollees sign up for.

Amazon is raising the price of Prime memberships

Amazon is raising the price of its annual Prime subscriptions from $119 to $139 per year in the United States, the company announced along with its earnings report Thursday. The price of a monthly subscription will also increase from $12.99 to $14.99.

The company said it is increasing the price because of "expanded Prime membership benefits," such as added Prime Video content and expanded free same-day shipping, as well to compensate for the rising costs of labor and transportation in its distribution network. The move comes as prices for just about everything — from food to energy — have gone up in recent months. Amazon also said last year that it had raised wages for thousands of workers.

Funeral for longtime South Florida radio personality 'The Byrdman' Wednesday

The funeral for Tim Byrd took place Wednesday.

Byrd, also known as "The Byrdman," died early Thursday morning, according to his agent. He was a longtime radio personality in South Florida.

Byrd, 68, was known by his nickname for multiple decades while on South Florida radio stations, emceeing at local charities, his lifestyle network and at his voiceover company.

He died from complications of pneumonia, according to a spokesperson at True Oldies Radio Station.

"Beloved by his listeners, friends and family, Tim was a giant to many charities as well," Byrd's agent, Brian Marro, said in a statement. "He is survived by his loving wife, Sally, Addy and Rola, as well as his mom, Bethany."

Byrd welcomed listeners each morning on the True Oldies Channel with his rich, deep trademark voice and upbeat personality.

And the Byrdman was invariably happy, whether behind the mic or out in the community. And off-air, Tim always dressed impeccably. He got his start in radio at age 15 in South Carolina by going to a local station and confidently asking for a job.

Some bank phishing scams target victims through texts

Watch out for bank phishing scams. These scams try to target customers of just about any bank.

A concerned viewer emailed sister station WGAL about a text she received that claimed to be from M&T Bank

The message provided a one-time password and said that if the recipient hadn't requested it, she should click on a provided link to verify her identity.

M&T's website said it will not send you an email or text requesting that you click on a hyperlink and enter your login credentials or personal information.

Clicking on that kind of link is nothing but bad news.

It can unload dangerous software onto your device and lock up your smartphone or computer.

If you get this text, just delete it.

If you have any questions about your bank account, contact the bank using a trusted phone number.

Tom Brady makes his retirement official after 22 seasons in the NFL

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady made it official Tuesday morning: He is retiring from the National Football League after 22 seasons.

"I have always believed the sport of football in an “all-in” proposition – if a 100 percent competitive commitment isn’t there, you won’t succeed and success is what I love so much about our game. There is a physical, mental and emotional challenge EVERY single day that has allowed me to maximize my highest potential. And I have tried to my very best these past 22 years. There are no shortcuts to success on the field or in life," Brady wrote in an Instagram post.
