Edwin and Erik Bustamante will receive their diplomas together Thursday morning
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. —
Thursday is a big day for many students at Indian River State College.
It’s the day they’ve been dreaming of — graduation.
Erik Bustamante is one of those students.
He’s receiving his associate degree in arts and marketing.
“It feels special,” he said. “Because the time has come. I’ve been in school for so long, and I’m finally getting my degree that I worked hard for.”
But Bustamante’s story is a little different, and not just because he’s graduating at the age of 17.
It’s who he’s graduating with.
His father will be walking with him and also collecting a diploma.
“I want to show them that if I can do well, why can they not be doing their best,” said Edwin Bustamante, Sr.
Edwin had a successful career until about ten years ago when two strokes changed his life forever.
Now at age 53, Edwin has turned that change into a college degree in horticulture and landscape technology.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
A very special birthday celebrated on Saturday ushered World War II veteran William Joseph Turner into his 102nd year.
“He’s always been in such great shape, he’s always been active, he was playing softball into his 60s,” said Billy Turner, the veteran’s son.
Turner, born and raised in San Francisco, met and married the love of his life, Delores, in 1942. Directly afterward, he was sent to England to serve as a master sergeant working on aircraft in the ‘Mighty 8th Air Force.’
“When they came back from a mission, I inspected them for battle damage and whatnot,” Turner said.
Gone for nearly three years, Turner returned to the states where he and Delores had their three children.
“Family meant everything to them, my mom had a hard life, and dad grew up through the depression and you would never know it,” said Turner’s oldest child, Karen Ranson.
“He’s the greatest guy I know, it’s that simple, I can’t name anyone that’s a greater person that I know and my dad and my mom,” said Turner’s son, Stephen Turner.
Turner attributes his longevity and happiness to his devotion to family, values, his love of baseball and wine.

Kane Tanaka, the world's oldest person, has died in Japan aged 119, according to a statement released by the country's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.
Tanaka, who was born on Jan. 2, 1903, died on April 19, the ministry said.
Guinness World Records said they were saddened to hear of Tanaka's passing, and said the news of her death had been confirmed by senior gerontology consultant Robert Young, who also helped confirm her record as the oldest person alive back in 2019.
Tweeting about her death, Guinness World Records said: "She became the oldest living person in January 2019 at the age of 116 years and 28 days.
"She is also the second oldest person ever recorded, behind only Jeanne Calment who lived to the age of 122."
Tanaka's family said in a tweet earlier this month that she had been frequently sick recently and "in and out of hospital."
Born in 1903, Tanaka married a rice shop owner at the age of 19, and worked in the family store until she was 103.
She twice survived cancer and lived through a multitude of historical events, surviving two world wars and the 1918 Spanish flu -- as well as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Queen Elizabeth II turns 96 on her official birthday?April 21, 2022. This marks the first of her two birthday celebrations this year.
Every year, the queen celebrates her birthday twice due to a long-standing custom. She celebrates once on her actual day of birth in April and again later in June.
This tradition of two birthday celebrations was established in case a monarch's birthday was to fall in a month when the weather was poor, like November or December. It would be more difficult for festivities like the Trooping of the Colour parade to take place in months of bad weather. The double birthday tradition was created so everyone could celebrate during warmer months. This tradition for monarchs started with King George II back in 1748.

One-hundred ten years ago, the Titanic struck an iceberg four days into the ship's maiden voyage — and more than 1,500 people lost their lives.
The 110th anniversary of the Titanic sinking is a special remembrance of those people who perished with the sinking ship.
The ship hit the iceberg around midnight on its journey from Southampton, England, to New York City.
Not only was the Titanic the most luxurious ship in the world at that time, but it was also one of the most technologically advanced. The massive ship took several thousand workers to construct, and two workers lost their lives during the build process. It had more than a dozen watertight compartments created to keep the ship floating if anything happened to it. This led many to believe the ship was unsinkable.
